3 BOOKS THAT INSPIRE CHANGE

Have you ever read a book that moved you so deeply, it sparked a change in you.  The kind of change that is deep down to your very core?  Skydiving certainly was the catalyst that prompted a huge shift in my life, but I found the inspiration to keep the momentum going, and create this blog, in the pages of a book.  That book was Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes.

I have read several books in the last couple of months that have fueled the fire and given me tools to help me reach my goals.  Here are three books that are sure to give you that jump start you might need or the motivation to keep going.

Year of Yes.  With the tagline, “How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun, and Be Your Own Person,” the cover alone had me inspired.  Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder, experienced a wake up call when her sister casually mentioned to her, “You never say yes to anything.”  After that, she decided that she was going to say YES to everything that scared her for an entire year.

Dreams are lovely.  But they are just dreams.  Fleeting, ephemeral, pretty.
But dreams do not come true just because you dream them.  It’s hard work that makes things happen.  It’s hard work that creates change.

What’s so powerful about this book?  This book has everything.  It’s funny, intimate, and blunt while chronicling what it’s like to say YES.  Reading about this powerhouse woman, who has the same fears and obstacles that we all face, conquer everything from her social anxiety to her health to her family with one simple word, makes you want to jump up and do the same.

 

You are a Badass:  How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life.  I actually have mixed reviews about this book, but I’m recommending it for a couple of reasons.  Jen Sincero’s passion and energy radiate through out this book.  It’s infectious.  She also provides concrete, step-by-step actions that are easy to understand and follow.

If you need a list of specific things to do to get you started, this is the book for you.  There aren’t any new or groundbreaking ideas in this book, but the topics included are very useful and important if you’re looking to change your life.  Sincero covers a variety of topics that address relationships, finances, career, and different aspects of your personal life.

If you’re serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way.
If you’re not, you’ll find an excuse.

You are a Badass is easy to read, straight forward, and honest.  If you’re looking for new techniques or ideas, then this probably isn’t the book for you.  But, if you need a refresher or just a boost to get you going, then grab this book and start being the badass that you are.  I highly recommend the audio version which you can grab at Audible.  It’s fantastic and if you’re new to Audible, you get a free 30 day trial!

 

 


 

 

Better Than Before.  If you haven’t read any of Gretchen Rubin’s books, stop right here, go grab one, and start reading.  I’ll wait!  Once you’re finished reading, tell me your life is not changed in some way.  I’ve read all of her books, but this one is by far my favorite.

I’ve always been fascinated about why people, especially myself, do the things we do.  How are some people so naturally motivated and others struggle?  Is it possible to change?  If so, how?  This book answers these questions and more.  Rubin, a self declared “street scientist.”  personally tests all of her research and then gives valuable tools and resources to create better, daily habits no matter what you’re personality type is.

If we change our habits, we change our life.

 

To make big, lasting changes, we have to start at the very basic foundation of our lives – our habits.  Everyday behaviors either help or hurt our pursuit of happiness.  This is by far my favorite book on this list.  If you only read one out of the three – read this one!
